A collaborative multi-media project with Rosemary Williams.
Sign-Age, created to coincide with the D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival, consisted of 11 industrially manufactured signs, an interactive website, and a paper map to be handed out during the festival. Eleven manufactured signs in ten strategic areas mimicked the format and scale of official traffic signs typically seen in New York streets. The signs utilized digital, photographic, appropriated imagery, and texts that call up memory, fact, and fiction relating to the sites.
During the festival, maps of D.U.M.B.O. with the sites marked on them were distributed allowing people to search for and discover the signs during their visit. Both the maps and the signs publicized the website address which linked viewers to an interactive website where they could add to and read other people’s memories, commentary, speculation, and even fantasy about those locations.
